Data space & resource cataloguing for Irish digital Earth science & high-end computing.

Earth:CHEC is a partnership between iCRAG and ICHEC that focuses on the planning and development of iCRAG's data management through enterprise architecture, cataloguing and metadata.

The iCRAG team in Earth:CHEC consults with iCRAG operations and researchers, partner institutions and stakeholders, such as GSI, HEAnet and EOSC, for its data management architecture and system development. Earth:CHEC focuses on reviewing this and developing these further with ICHEC. This will enable the development of GSI-aligned data catalogues for geoscience by ICHEC as a part of the national platform and services for high-performance computing (HPC) and data management.

  • Practical architectures in infrastructure such as EUDAT will help the iCRAG multi institution SFI research centre to address the challenge of building data management mechanisms between legal entities to improve access to Irish Geoscience resources and data: for current research and into the future.
  • It will help develop FAIR Open Geoscience data provision for Ireland and beyond, and contribute to Ireland’s full engagement with the European Open Science Cloud and EUDAT.
  • This would have a transformative effect on the scope and scale of iCRAG data management policy, technological platforms and targeted project areas, and preparing data strategy for iCRAG3.

Objectives

  • Plan, design and develop data management systems for applied geosciences.
  • Build FAIR & Open geoscience data systems & practices.
  • Ensure metadata for self-validating metadata based on GSI tables, RDA and GEO guidelines.
  • Align with national & international data management initiatives.
  • Link with IRLDAT, EOSC & European Common Data Spaces.

Planned outcomes of Earth:CHEC and beyond

  • Multi-institution, national data management platform for Irish geoscience research community.
  • New FAIR systems for geoscience data management for Ireland.
  • Increase accessibility and usability in Irish geoscience data.
  • Alignment with member institutional research infrastructure developments.
  • Upscaling from local to national geological and geophysical rendering and modelling.
  • Facilitate iCRAG data management policy and develop data strategy for iCRAG in future centres.
  • Helping GSI deliver Ireland's National Geoscience Datacentre.
